How does a New Zealander end up campaigning for
the "Hiccup Girl."
Written by Robert A. Stewart
Florida woman Jennifer Mee gained notoriety as a teenager when she suffered from non-stop
hiccups. So much so that she appeared on television to tell her story, however, just a few years
later and after the hiccup situation had been cured, Jennifer, as a nineteen year old, made
headlines for a different reason.
Here is the story:
Jennifer set up a date with a young man she had contacted on Facebook. He was interested in
romance but her motive was robbery. With the assistance of her two male companions,
They attempted to mug the victim at a location which Jennifer arranged to meet her on a date.
In the process of the robbery he was fatally shot.
Under Florida law all participants of a fatal robbery are equally guilty of murder, in this case
first degree murder irrespective of their part igen the murder itself.
All three were convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of
parole.
Jennifer was offered a plea bargain but at this stage I do not know what kind of a sentence she
was offered. Jennifer's lawyer told her that he was going to defend the murder charge rather
than accept the plea bargain
It was in late 2018 when I watched a TV program presented by British TV presenter Pier Morgan
that I first became aware of Jennifer's situation. At that time I had been on a letter writing
crusade for Texan woman Erin Caffey who appeared in Morgan's program a year earlier.
My instant reaction on watching the program about Jennifer is that it isn't right to sentence
someone for life for a death which was not even intentional. There is no doubt that there was
never any intention to murder the victim.
I began my letter writing campaign for Jennifer; at that stage I had been campaigning for
Erin Caffey from Texas and Cyntoia Brown from Tennessee. Erin had appeared in Morgan's
earlier program while I learned of Cyntoia Brown's situation on New Zealand's AM show.
The campaign for Cyntoia was led by Kim Kardashian. Cyntoia was granted clemency in
August 2019.
Contacting Jennifer was quite easy. I simply used the prison email system called jpay.com.
We have been in touch with one another ever since.
My letter writing campaign for these women has been fruitless. I wrote to a lot of politicians
including President Trump, but none replied.
I also wrote letters to some celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Tom Brady, and
Piers Morgan but none of them replied. Kim Kardashian has been campaigning for prison reform
for a few years and has been mentioned campaigning for the release of Cyntoia Brown.
Clemency is an option I am looking at. I am collecting information for that including facts to
support my statements.
Just recently I contacted Jennifer's former lawyer to ask a couple of questions but received
no response.
You can watch videos of Jennifer on Youtube by typing Jennifer Mee into Youtube's search
engine. Videos on Erin Caffey and Cyntoia Brown are also on Youtube.
